Notification! by Cyarin

THE GIST

Whether you’re checking to see the latest comment or badge sent by a fellow deviant, notifications are a vital aspect of the DeviantArt experience.

Now we want to make it even easier for you to find the latest comments, favorites, and other activities most important to you. We’re working on introducing a notifications dropdown on the header that will appear on every page of the site, so that you’ll have easier access to the latest events that matter without having to leave your browsing experience. And yes, the current notifications system will still be there.

Here is the latest design we are looking at:

Notifications1a By Starvingartist-d985m6x by arbiterofelegance

EVOLUTION

Notifications is pretty complex, here is a snippet of what it looks like on the other side of a rather seemingly simple user interface.

Screen Shot 2015-09-03 at 10.12.20 AM by arbiterofelegance

Naturally, we will be releasing it in several stages.

The first stage will encompass only the most important notification types, which includes most events that currently appear in the feedback section of notifications.

In future stages, we may include features such as:

  • Commissions
  • Prints
  • Downloads
  • Critiques
  • Certain notifications related to group activity and...
  • The ability to act on certain notifications straight from the drop-down menu, such as replying to a comment, accepting or declining commission, and much more!

NOTES 2.0

In the same spirit of notifications, the latest notes in your inbox will be available for easy access across the site through a simple drop-down menu. It too will be released in several stages, but before we go there, here is the latest design for what it may look like:

Notes1a By Starvingartist-d985phz-1 by arbiterofelegance

The first version will include snippets from each note, but future ones may introduce the ability to:

  • view the note in its entirety
  • reply to the note...

...both straight from the drop-down menu.

DeviantArt Timeline Update

Please note: The "New Thumbnails (Preview)" flag on the DeviantArt Timeline has been moved to October 8th.  This additional time will allow for more internal testing, with an aim to improve performance and responsiveness.

DeviantArt's User Experience and User Interface team leads a discussion about the future of notifications.  We want to make it easier to find comments, favorites, and other activities most important to you. We're working on a notifications drop down that will appear on every page of the site, so that you’ll have access to the latest events – without having to leave your browsing experience.

NOTIFICATIONS

1. Which events are most important for you to be notified about and why?
in order, it would be comments and replies, but since i get a lot of favs id rather not see ALL of them individually in the widget. id rather it be stacked, for example if people faved something of mine all at one time (like it is right now in the notif center), it should be stacked like [15 deviants favorited your deviation " ____"] or something like that. then i could click it, and see each individual favorite if i wanted to.
comments and replies are important to me because... well, its how i stay connected to my watchers and friends! i would also like comments stacked like they are in the notif center currently. and i can click on the stack to see and reply to each individual comment, like i explained above. that way everything stays a lot more organized and less clutter!

2. If you could reply to some notifications straight from the drop down menu, which events would you want to act on (if any)?
id love if you kept the option to see my previous comment on replies! so if i forgot what the conversation was about, i can go back and peek really quickly. otherwise, theres not much else id want besides just being able to reply. i also think itd be cool to have a "reply later" option- to replace the ability to drag n drop comments into folders (since im pretty sure thats going away? i hope it doesnt). so if i want something out of my way, but still want to reply, i can "save it for later". does that make sense?

3. How important do you think it would be for you to see Group-related notifications? And if so, please identify yourself as a group administrator or member or both (or neither ;) (Wink)) and list which events you would find most useful to have quick access to from the header.
not very important, im an admin/contributor of a few groups, but id rather those messages have their own section, like yknow... how they do now. its just way, WAY more organized that way!

NOTES

1. How does the idea for having an option of being able to view the entire note from the drop down sound to you?
sounds great!

2. How about the option to directly reply to the note from within the drop down?
even better!!!

Quite useful for the occasional quick peek at a particular event...

Given thet state of my inbox as of now, I can safely tell that relying solely on the Notifications center can be a bit of a chore. Otherwise, it still serves well its purpose of managing them ^^

Now to your questions: I don't have much to say on notifications, so I'll answer regarding notes instead...
  1. How does the idea for having an option of being able to view the entire note from the drop down sound to you? Well...Why not? Even though, I'd still rather rely on the Notifications center for that
  2. How about the option to directly reply to the note from within the drop down? Sounds neat...Just don't turn it into a "dropdown labyrinth" of sorts XD

I don't like the "social media" direction you're going with for the notifications. I like being able to take the time and go over my notifications, as DA to me is a lot more intimate in terms of interactions. This "quick glance" look just makes your notifications into white noise. Not to mention you'll be clicking on it all the time to check for updates (which I do on Facebook and Tumblr--that gets annoying really quick).

another step towards facebook - is it so hard to come up with original ideas?!

Most important for me are comments on my deviations and replies on my comments and favs. The idea of responding to a note directly in this dropdown menu sounds impractical and more complicated to make. If you have to just make a reply button that opens a new tab. But I like the wax it is. The category ("feedback" etc.) gives me enough info. For people with way more new notes/comments/ etc. coming in you could make the mail symbol white/blinking/etc. everytime they get something new.

Eh, I'm not a fan. At all, actually. The notification/note center is perfect as it is in my opinion- it being on a separate page gives it a more stable and solid feel, especially when replying to or reading comments/notes or checking a full inbox after a night's rest. People who get lots of comments a day [whether it be feedback or roleplays or something else] kinda need that I think. A drop-down menu feels and is way more unstable [eg. clicking outside and thus closing it].

Besides, that drop-down menu up there in the journal is a lot smaller and thus it would suck for writing longer messages and it's just way less efficient overall since you have less space to fit everything into.

I personally think the notification center is perfect as it is. Everything is nicely sorted and especially on a computer it's very clear,l 'solid' and efficient. Please don't change that. It's perfect as it is- please don't make it worse and harder for us to use! The entire website doesn't need to be on one single page! P:

If I wanted facebook I would go to facebook. dA has been a website for artists of all kinds - facebook is a place to go see how fat your exes have become. The way fb handles photographs is troublesome and inefficient.
Stop The Transition To Facebook - start listening to the users.

Please tell me our notifications aren't actually stored in a spreadsheet on the backend. That's just.. no.

So really this is just updating the messages dropdown to give more information about messages. I think the most important thing is to allow this new dropdown to be splintered like the current dropdown.

Notifications:
  1. Group messages. My personal notifications are mostly just social chit-chat; my group messages, on the other hand, have people making inquiries and making submissions that need approval.
  2. The drop-down box does not strike me as a good place to write out a comment. Having a button to return a llama or give a generic "thanks" message could sit well in there.
  3. VERY. I am an administrator of several groups, and a member of many more. However, group admin messages are probably best separated out, like they are on the notifications page, i.e. a third drop down box that only appears if one is a group admin, with the little subheadingy things for each group admined. Backroom discussions and gallery submissions would be most important (accept/decline from there would be useful). Group notes are probably important too, but the large amount we get over at dAWishingWell makes me doubtful whether I would want them showing up there :giggle:
Notes
  1. Kind of terrible, especially if its all going to be grey on white like that. Also, I receive some pretty long notes sometimes.
  2. Trying to write a note in a field that only appears on hover? No. I've already had the login menu freak out at me because I let it close between putting in a username and the password :stare: Not to mention that, to display the original note and have a reply field, either the little box will take up the entire page height, or there will be a lot of scrolling involved.

But I think it would me more useful if the existing notification counts in the header updated in real-time with AJaX, so we know if we have new messages without reloading, especially useful if you're just sitting in chat.

NOTIFICATIONS
  1. Which events are most important for you to be notified about and why?
A: For me it all depends, for example if I have just published a journal then I'm most interested in the comments on that one so it's not an overall of which events I find most important. I like the current notification system where I find it all in the pretty message centre where I have a good overview, I don't see a reason (except for groups, se comment below) that I would use this.
  1. If you could reply to some notifications straight from the drop down menu, which events would you want to act on (if any)?
A: Probably if someone have written on my profile to say thank you, they're easy and quick to respond to, the rest I would prefer to do in the comfort of my own home - the message centre.

  2. How important do you think it would be for you to see Group-related notifications? And if so, please identify yourself as a group administrator or member or both (or neither ;) (Wink)) and list which events you would find most useful to have quick access to from the header.
A: This on the other hand I actually find useful. I'm admin of several groups, founder of two. Instead of having to go to the group's submissions/comments page to see if there are notes/comments it would be so handy to have that as a drop down menu and I feel that would make the user experience for my members better because then I can respond more quickly and they don't have to go directly to me through note if it's important, I can have it all collected in one place. That also means it would be great to be able to answer comments and notes directly in the drop down. No need to show submissions there.

NOTES
  1. How does the idea for having an option of being able to view the entire note from the drop down sound to you?
A: Nah, it's enough with a snippet so I can know what it's about and if I need to answer it right away or not.

  2. How about the option to directly reply to the note from within the drop down?
A: Not really interested, I prefer the real note place, same with fb - I prefer the actual place to write PM and not that little chat square.

This isn't a bad idea all in all. There are some things that seem like they could be pretty cool, and some that I would rather not change. My biggest worry is clutter as well. Being a member of a group, I get a bunch of notifications (from a few to the hundreds when I don't check back in a while), and I worry about what it would be like to go through them through the drop-down menu. Otherwise, when it comes to things like Faves, Watches, etc., a drop-down menu is not a bad idea. However, my personal preference is and probably will still be to go to the message center to view my notifications and notes. I'm quite content with the current notification system.
BUT! I think I will really be able to tell how much I like/don't like the new UI design once it's implemented :)

Now for the Questions:

NOTIFICATIONS

1. Which events are most important for you to be notified about and why?

dA contests/winners, site updates, other dA news and related things; faves, watches, comments, critiques and replies as well. (Oh, well, that pretty much includes most of everything ;P) These are the ones I care the most for, as I'm always happy to get faves or watches or comments, or to see a new and exciting contest. Site updates are obviously really important; I'd like to know when something is going to be changed or whatnot.

2. If you could reply to some notifications straight from the drop down menu, which events would you want to act on (if any)?

I much prefer to go to the message center to reply to any events. The only events I might reply to are those like thanking for llamas, or a fave, or a watch, or short comments - these are easy to do through a drop-down. However, I don't think replying from the drop-down menu will be easy for longer comments/critiques and the like. Also, I like to go to a fellow artist's profile to view his/her gallery when I receive llamas/comments/replies and get faves/watches - this is often how I discover new artists I like! As long as we have the option to open a new tab to their profile directly from the drop-down menu, then that's pretty cool.

3. How important do you think it would be for you to see Group-related notifications? And if so, please identify yourself as a group administrator or member or both (or neither ;) (Wink)) and list which events you would find most useful to have quick access to from the header.

I'm a member of a couple groups and I can get quiiiite a few notifications, most of which I don't really care about. It's much easier to sort through them directly from the message center when you get that many, than to have them all individually displayed in a drop-down menu (if my understanding of the new UI design is correct). In such a case, I would end up going to the message center to sort through those notifications anyway. In the case of new deviations, which is what would clutter up the drop-down the most, I would prefer they be stacked and accessed through the message center (as is done currently). The Group-related notifications I would care most to see, instead, are Contests, Featured Artists, and other things like this.

NOTES

1. How does the idea for having an option of being able to view the entire note from the drop down sound to you?

This is fine, not a bad idea. If it's a short note, however. If it's a long note, then it becomes difficult to view it from the drop-down menu and it would be easier to go to the message center to read it all. I exchange notes really often, ~5 days of the week and may send several ones within a day as well. For these kinds of notes, I would probably just go to the message center.

2. How about the option to directly reply to the note from within the drop down?

Like in the previous answer, this is fine for short notes in which you don't have a lot to write. I often exchange lengthier notes, so I'm not sure how easy it would be to do that from a drop-down. For example, if replying to a note opens a pop-up menu (I think that's what they're called?) in the middle of the browser page, like when you submit multiple works to a group gallery, and you have the option to resize it to accommodate various note lengths, I think that could work quite well. (I'm not sure if I explained this properly...).
If I have to view a huge note from within a small drop-down menu, then it's a no-go.

Oh! One more thing! If we reply to notifications and notes from the drop-down, the "add media" button will still be there right? So we can add in emoticons, GIFs and other things? (Might be an obvious question, whoops ^^;)

Suggestions: And yes, I agree with Nylten, I think making the drop-down menu a settings option is a good idea.

One thing about group notifications I'd like to see is the option to see the application text for an "x has joined the group" message, in the cases where membership is automatically approved. Otherwise we miss them entirely and in the few cases I care to look through the log, there have been some interesting comments and suggestions.

No thanks. You already played with the notifications enough by separating the club stuff in another section from the watch list. That seems good enough and doesn't really need anymore changing. If anything, this will become an annoyance that will probably push a lot of people away.

Ooooooh, very nice. I like the possible designs. I noticed somebody mentioned that it could be troublesome for people who receive A LOT of notifications on a regular basis. I admit I could see this being a problem, so I would definitely consider some customization options so people in that situation will be more comfortable using it.

NOTIFICATIONS
  1. Which events are most important for you to be notified about and why?

The notifications that are the most important to me are comments and activity notifications like favorites or watches. I really like to follow how people feel about what I post, keep track of conversations with people, and I do get that nice little happy feeling when I know someone likes something I posted. It sounds vain, but it's encouraging.

  2. If you could reply to some notifications straight from the drop down menu, which events would you want to act on (if any)?

Comments/Replies. They're usually small, quick messages so I have no problem with the idea of acting on and replying to them in the drop down menu, even though it's such a small space. If the drop down menu could be resized, or the reply window opened with a lightbox effect over whatever page I'm currently on, it'd be even better.

  3. How important do you think it would be for you to see Group-related notifications? And if so, please identify yourself as a group administrator or member or both (or neither ;) (Wink)) and list which events you would find most useful to have quick access to from the header.

More important for some groups than other. I'm a member of many, but I'm most interested in the digital doll related groups, so I would definitely like to keep track of journals, deviations and such from those groups in the drop down menu. But I wouldn't care about ALL the groups I follow that much, so being able to customize exactly which groups show up in it would be nice.

NOTES
  1. How does the idea for having an option of being able to view the entire note from the drop down sound to you?

Eh...I'm iffy on this. I like having the notifications and being able to see a preview of the notes in the drop down, but notes tend to be longer than comments, so that feels like it could be cumbersome in such a small space. The lightbox idea would be great here too: Have a preview with the subject, sender, and the first few lines in the drop down, then open up a lightbox where people can view the full note and are given the option to reply to it.

  2. How about the option to directly reply to the note from within the drop down?

Like I said above, I prefer something that gives more room, like the current Notes set up does, so I'd prefer either a lightbox or a redirect to my Notes Inbox in order to reply. If I type longer messages, I like having more room to work than the current potential design provides, so I would be very uncomfortable with replying to Notes in the drop down since they tend to be longer from me.

I like this. A lot.
As an artist, I enjoy receiving comments and Favourites on my work, just like anyone else. I also enjoy seeing who posted them, or clicked the Favourite button.
Therefore, 1) Comment events are probably the most important thing to me. If I can click a dropdown menu and see who commented on what and said what without actually having to leave the page I'm on, or open the Notification Centre in another tab, hell yeah. Also, being an adminstrator for a few Groups, if I can access notifications for them with as much ease as my own, it'll make moderating my Groups all that much simpler. That said, Favourites, approvals (to Group galleries and such) and even Journals are all things I'd love to be able to access with ease.

2) If I could respond to even one type of event, I'd instantly choose comments. I can already imagine the simplicity of simply opening the dropdown menu, clicking on a comment and then answering - all from whatever page I'm on. Hell, if I can do it from dAmn, all the better!

3) As I previously stated, I administrate a couple of Groups, one of which is a Group that organises DevMeets in my city. If I can view and even respond to comments on Journal entries from anywhere in the site without having to actually navigate to the Journal in question, it'll make my job (hobby?) so much simpler, and all the more rewarding.

Now, Notes! Oh my god.

Just yes. All of my yes. Give us Notes in an easily accessible menu. Give us the ability to respond to them inside that same menu.

I simply can't express how amazing this would be.

No no no no no, don't make it like facebook.  I despise these kinds of notification displays--absolutely despise them!  And they are the most troublesome for people who get tons of feedback or have lots of backed-up feedback (such as myself.)  Please, please don't do this--unless it's just for mobile, then that might be fine.
What is this nonsense about "leaving browsing experience"?  Do people not know how to "OPEN IN A NEW TAB"?????  Really??  If I'm busy on one page but notice that I have a new notification, I will either patiently wait until I am finished with what I'm doing, or right-click and open in a new tab.
It's not rocket science.  This isn't 2000 where we don't have tabs and we have to open new windows.  No, we have tabs for a reason, so that we don't interrupt what we're already doing on one page.
Please, for the love of all that is artsy, do not do this "revision."  Please.
Pleaaase do not.

I know the Notification site is quite complex. It switches between dA and Sta.sh a lot, which makes it near impossible for me to load whenever I have a slow connection (which is one to two weeks per month!).
Is there some kind of lite version that I could access to read my replies?

NOTIFICATIONS
  1. Which events are most important for you to be notified about and why?
Comments and replies, of course, but mentions are super great also!
  2. If you could reply to some notifications straight from the drop down menu, which events would you want to act on (if any)?
Reply? Not sure, I think I would like to move stuff to folders from the drop down menu.
  3. How important do you think it would be for you to see Group-related notifications? And if so, please identify yourself as a group administrator or member or both (or neither ;) (Wink)) and list which events you would find most useful to have quick access to from the header.
As a Group admin, Group-related notifictations would be quite important! I have to make extra clicks to get to the Group section.
As a Group member, Group-related notifications still are Deviations and Journals for me, which I treat the same way as I do non-Group Deviations and Journals.

NOTES
  1. How does the idea for having an option of being able to view the entire note from the drop down sound to you?
    Yeah, OK. Sounds nice.
  2. How about the option to directly reply to the note from within the drop down?

What it's not clear to me is if the dropdown menu will replace the current message system or it will coexist with it.

If it's just a feature that will coexist with the current system, I'm fine with it. But I don't like the idea of changing the current system - where messages actually STAY visible for years - with something as fleeting as a dropdown menu.

It will co-exist and complement the existing message center. This is more for the people who check their messages really frequently, so they don't have to leave whatever they were already doing to check, rather than for people who actively use the message center to sort and store notifications like you're talking about.

NO PLEASE DO NOT ADD. DO NOT ADD. No more drop downs. with how many your site loads it already takes sometimes 35-47 seconds for the damn login drop down to actually drop down while loading the dang page. I don't need you to add a useless feature. If im looking somewhere else im LOOKING somewhere else. IN case you didnt know this is an art website. This is like having to try and converse with someone (through your art) but instead they are texting on their phone while standing in front of you. Doesn't each deviant deserve even that small amount of respect as to not have viewers more focused on "notifications".

  1. Which events are most important for you to be notified about and why?

none I will damn well go through ALL of them in my NOTIFICATIONS PAGE

  1. If you could reply to some notifications straight from the drop down menu, which events would you want to act on (if any)?

NONE

  1. How important do you think it would be for you to see Group-related notifications? And if so, please identify yourself as a group administrator or member or both (or neither ;) (Wink)) and list which events you would find most useful to have quick access to from the header.

NONE

NOTES
  1. How does the idea for having an option of being able to view the entire note from the drop down sound to you?

AWFUL AS IN THE WHOLE IDEA IS AWFUL. I don't want more clutter on my screen

  1. How about the option to directly reply to the note from within the drop down?

No, its worthless I can reply to notifications, guess where? IN MY NOTIFICATIONS PAGE

You all JUST complained about how every feature and page costs money and time to update and fix and maintain but you will basically be giving us the same damn thing we ALREADY HAVE.... great yeah and you wonder why people are starting to consider deviant art as nothing but a troll art website.

I tell other artists I have a deviantart webpage and they are like "ehhh you should get a tumblr/twitter account it will serve you better then deviantart"

Im starting to think I should because you all want to waste resources on making his out to be some modpodge collection of features from other sites and have LESS focus on the artists who are here and trying to share their art

Please no. The message system is fine as it is! This new system looks like it will only be a bother.

LOL
You've used an image in a journal about notifications and you didn't bother to notify the owner?

So, are we all allowed to do that?

Yes. There is no law against it because they didn't 'right click' and make an illegal digital copy. Instead, it's simply being 'projected' from its original location, without actually copying it. Sort of like if 100 computer screens are 'projecting' my art into 100 houses, the screens aren't actually copying it, just viewing it. It's simply the nature of how digital imagery works, it can be projected without a physical copy being made (sort of like what a 'mirror' can do with traditional art)
